LCX4Rail investigates innovative applications of leaky coaxial cables (LCX) technology in rail transportation. The project of the Chair of Transport Systems Information Technology has now been awarded 3rd place in the SET4FUTURE Awards of the rail industry association Rail.S e.V.
Together with the MRK Group, the Chair of Transport Systems Information Technology is researching a new way of using leaky waveguide technology in rail transport in the LCX4Rail project. The jointly developed infrastructure allows the simultaneous use of radio coverage, vehicle location and obstacle detection via a single LCX cable laid along the tracks for the first time - even in difficult-to-access terrain such as tunnels or valleys.
Compared to conventional solutions, LCX4Rail reduces the need for hardware, lowers costs and increases efficiency through software-based signal utilization. In combination with fiber optic sensors, this creates a scalable platform for digital, automated rail systems - compatible with European standards such as FRMCS.

The jury praised LCX4Rail as a resource-saving key technology with international exemplary character for the mobility turnaround. We warmly congratulate the research team on the award.
