Since spring 2021, a Reinforcement Learning (RL) Group has been established by the Transport and Traffic Sciences at TU Dresden (TUD). Now, an international conference on the topic took place at the TUD on 15/16 September 2022.

Reinforcement Learning (RL) is a collection of different machine learning methods in which an artificial or computer-based system independently learns a strategy in order to increase the rewards it contains. This machine learning method was the subject of the international "Conference on Reinforcement Learning" (RL) in Dresden in mid-September.

The two-day conference was attended by more than 75 participants and brought together leading scientists and researchers from academia and industry in the field of reinforcement learning. It served as a platform for the exchange of scientific expertise and experience as well as current trends in the field of RL – also with a view to transport research. In addition, potential practical hurdles and problems in researching and finding solutions to problems were discussed.

A total of 20 speakers presented their experiences and current innovations on various topics of reinforcement learning. Keynote speakers at the conference were Matthieu Geist (Université de Lorraine/Frankreich), Jan Peters (Technische Universität Darmstadt), Marcello Restelli (Politecnico di Milano/ Italien), Frederik Schulte (Delft University of Technology/Niederlande), Kaushik Subramanian (Sony AI/Schweiz+Japan) und Richard Sutton (University of Alberta/USA).

On the evening of the first day, the participants enjoyed a guided tour of Dresden, followed by a traditional Saxon dinner.

The conference was organised by the Chair of Econometrics and Statistics, esp. in the Transport Sector on behalf of the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences at TU Dresden.

About the conference

The conference consisted of six selected international keynote speakers and 14 other international speakers. Other co-organisers and cooperation partners were the RL Group Dresden, the ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig (Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence) and the German Research Foundation (DFG).
