Saxony on the move! The future of mobility

How will we move in the future? How do we make Saxony's public transport fit for the growing demands on climate protection, flexibility and costs? What are the trends? What can the state do to make public transport more attractive?

The Saxon Minister of Transport discusses these and other questions in the programme "Martin Dulig I Konkret" with Burkhard Jung, Mayor of the City of Leipzig, Joanna Kesicka, head of the Saxony State Student Council, Prof. Dr Thomas von Unwerth, Professor of Alternative Vehicle Drives TU Chemnitz, and Ulf Middelberg, Managing Director of Leipziger Verkehrsbetriebe in a rolling e-bus on a city tour through Leipzig.

Dresden transport and traffic expert Prof. Dr.-Ing. Arnd Stephan from the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences at the TU Dresden was interviewed in advance for the programme (minute 12:39 to 18:31). The head of the Chair of Electrical Railways talks about,

• why he would like to see a lot of mobility in the future, but not much traffic,
• what traffic has to look like to be really highly efficient, space-saving and quieter,
• why autonomous driving is currently less a technical challenge than a legal, ethical and social one,
• why the best ideas around transport and mobility are doomed to failure without suitable business models, and
• what all this has to do with the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences "Friedrich List" at the TU Dresden.

Transport Minister Martin Dulig: "The Corona pandemic was and is an enormous challenge for Saxon public transport. Less mobility and fears of contagion are putting pressure on transport companies. At the same time, the demands on public transport are growing due to the challenges of climate protection, increasing flexibility and rising costs. We want to strengthen public transport with attractive offers, such as the education ticket or a growing Plus and Takt bus Network. Saxony's public transport must get going. That's why Saxony is getting on board."
