Prof. Udo Becker and Dr. Stefan Frank are the first winners of the new "Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching".

The prize, each endowed with 250 euros, was awarded at the "Day of the Faculty" on 10. November in the large lecture hall 81 in the Gerhart Potthoff Building at TU Dresden. "The future-oriented and high-quality further development of our teaching is a current focus of our work at the faculty. This is one of our major challenges in the coming years," said Dean Prof. Regine Gerike at the award ceremony. "But of course we are not starting from scratch. Here at our faculty there are many good teachers and excellent teaching that can be built on. These positive examples usually happen behind the doors of seminar rooms and lecture halls. With the award, we want to bring these examples more into the public eye," says the dean.

Prof. Udo Becker at the award ceremony

Prof. Udo Becker, holder of the Chair of Transport Ecology until autumn 2021 and now a senior professor, received the prize in the "Basic Teaching" category for his lecture "Environment & Transport". In their justification for the prize, presented by student council speaker Hosea Winter, the students attested to Prof. Becker's "extraordinarily exciting and committed lecturing style and a clear and understandable presentation of content".

Dr. Stefan Klein at the award ceremony

Dr. Stefan Frank, head of the Transport Logistics Working Group at the faculty, received the teaching award in the category "Advance Teaching" for his lecture on "Resource Management". Here the students, read out by student representative Victor Nitzsche, emphasised Dr. Frank's active commitment to "offering a student-friendly hybrid format and using appropriate examples in each case to convey the individual theories". The latter was very helpful due to the heterogeneous mix of students from different courses of study and specialisations.

Both winners were visibly pleased about the prize as well as the appreciation and thanked the students and the faculty for this honour. Both would like to donate the prize money to the faculty's student council for its work.

About the teaching award

In the Faculty Council, an annual teaching award for the transport and traffic sciences was suggested and decided upon. After a pre-selection of good and very good courses by the Transport Student Council (FSR), the students of the faculty voted in the autumn using Opal. The FSR then submitted the justified proposals of possible candidates for the teaching award to the Faculty Council, where the final decision on the award was made.

From now on, the prize will be awarded annually in the categories "Basic Teaching" and "Advanced Teaching". It is endowed with 250 euros each.
