As of March 10, 2026, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Rico Wittwer was appointed Extraordinary Professor in the field of Mobility Behavior at the Chair of Mobility System Planning. This makes him the first Extraordinary Professor at the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences.

Rico Wittwer studied Civil Engineering at TU Dresden from 1997 to 2003, specializing in urban planning and traffic route construction, and has been associated with the faculty in various roles for many years. After completing his studies, he initially worked as a Research Associate at the Chair of Transport and Infrastructure Planning and completed his doctorate in 2008 on the topic of "Spatial structural influences on traffic behavior". He continued his academic career with his habilitation in 2014 in the field of "Transport Planning". This was followed by the award of his teaching qualification and appointment as Privatdozentent (PD) in 2015. Since then, he has been a Research Associate at the Chair of Mobility System Planning (formerly Integrated Transport Planning and Road Traffic Engineering), where he has headed the "Mobility Behavior" research field since 2018.

In his scientific work, Rico Wittwer focuses in particular on human mobility behavior, the empirical analysis of transport demand and the application of quantitative methods in transport planning. His research combines theoretical models with data-driven approaches and provides important foundations for evidence-based and sustainable transport planning. The close integration of research and practice is also reflected in his involvement in current research projects, including Mobility in Cities - SrV and as Principle Investigator (PI) in the SFB/TRR 408 - AgiMo - Data-driven agile planning for responsible mobility.

In addition to his research, Rico Wittwer has been firmly involved in teaching at the faculty for many years. He is responsible for and designs courses in mobility system planning, teaches methodological skills in empirical data analysis and supervises theses. He is also involved in academic self-administration and actively contributes to the further development of the Faculty's degree programs and research profiles.

"The appointment as Extraordinary Professor is a great honor for me and at the same time an incentive to continue actively shaping mobility research at TU Dresden. It is particularly important to me to prepare scientific findings in such a way that they make concrete contributions to sustainable and future-proof transport planning," said Rico Wittwer, who was ceremoniously presented with his certificate at today's Faculty Council meeting.

We would like to congratulate Rico Wittwer on his appointment as Extraordinary Professor and wish him continued success and enjoyment in his research and teaching.

Background: Extraordinary Professor

The title "Extraordinary Professor" (apl. Prof.) is an academic title awarded in Germany to academics who have worked independently in research and teaching for several years after their habilitation and have achieved outstanding results. In contrast to a regular Chair, the appointment of an Extraordinary Professor is not usually associated with a permanent position, but does represent a high level of academic recognition.
