Scientists from the Chairs of Transport Ecology and Mobility System Planning took part in the 6th NaKoMo annual conference of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV) with the FoPS research project “Indicators of sustainable urban mobility”.

How can mobility in urban and rural areas be made measurable and sustainable? What criteria are needed to strategically plan, successfully implement and evaluate measures? Researchers from the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences are addressing these questions in the FoPS project “Indicators of sustainable urban mobility”.

FoPS project “Indicators of sustainable urban mobility”

A sustainable urban mobility plan requires clear, measurable goals. Clear and quantifiable key figures are essential to show whether the measures and packages of measures have been successfully implemented.

As part of the research project “Indicators of Sustainable Urban Mobility”, the Sustainable Urban Mobility Indicators (SUMI) developed for the European region are to be reflected and translated into a target and indicator system for German municipalities. The project is funded by the Urban Transport Research Program (FoPS).

Last year, the Chair of Mobility System Planning conducted a survey of municipalities together with the German Institute of Urban Affairs (Difu) to develop a system of indicators. The survey recorded the local understanding of sustainability, objectives in mobility and transport planning as well as indicators and data already used to measure sustainable mobility in the municipalities. The results were incorporated into the target and indicator system, which was subsequently developed jointly by the Chair of Transport Ecology and the project partners from Rupprecht Consult.

Julia Gerlach, research assistant at the Chair of Transport Ecology, and Jonas Krombach, research assistant at the Chair of Mobility System Planning, presented some of the research results at the 6th NaKoMo annual conference of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV) and exchanged views with experts on the implementation of sustainable mobility.

The National Competence Network for Sustainable Mobility (NaKoMo)

Founded in 2019, the National Competence Network for Sustainable Mobility (NaKoMo) is a central point of contact and exchange platform for federal, state and local authorities as well as experts on the topic of sustainable mobility. It is affiliated with the “Sustainable Urban and Rural Mobility, Networks, Digital Municipal Transport Systems” department of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs (BMDV).

The focus of the 6th NaKoMo annual conference was on the EU Commission's guidelines for “Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans” (SUMP) and their application from an economic, ecological and social perspective in the municipalities. To support cities and municipalities in implementing the SUMP, the BMDV presented the national support program “nachhaltig. mobil. planen” at this year's NaKoMo conference.
