Great success for 3 professorships of the Dresden Institute of Transport Planning and Road Traffic at TU Dresden. They are hosting the ICSC 2022. Around 200 international participants are expected.

The "10th International Cycling Safety Conference (ICSC) 2022" will take place in Dresden next year from 8 to 10 November. The TU Dresden has successfully applied to host the event. Hosts and organisers are three chairs of the Institute of Transport Planning and Road Traffic at the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences of TU Dresden. At this year's ICSC 2021, which was held online due to the Corona pandemic, the future hosts for 2022 gave a first taste of the Saxon state capital with a video.

Making cycling safer together

The International Cycling Safety Conference (ICSC) is a forum for scientists and experts whose scientific and practical activities are aimed at making cycling safer and thus ultimately increasing the share of cycling. The conference offers the opportunity to exchange views on the topic at a high level and with a wide range of content, and to identify approaches to solutions as well as new research questions. The conference thus addresses participants from disciplines as diverse as traffic planning, traffic and transportation psychology, traffic medicine or engineering.

Sustainable mobility and road safety as focal points for Dresden host professorships

The organisational and content-related management of the ICSC 2022 lies with the Dresden Chair of Traffic and Transportation Psychology headed by Prof. Tibor Petzoldt. Also involved are the Chair of Integrated Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering headed by Prof. Regine Gerike and the Chair of Transport Ecology (the chair is currently vacant, the appointment procedure is ongoing). Topics such as sustainable mobility and road safety are established focal points in research and teaching at all three professorships.

The Chairs of Transport Ecology and Traffic and Transportation Psychology investigate, among other things, aspects of cyclists' route choice and resulting implications for the improvement of cycling infrastructure. Chair of Integrated Transport Planning and Traffic Engineering is intensively concerned with factors influencing the objective safety of cyclists and currently also with aspects of cyclists' subjective perception of safety on different types of infrastructure. The Chair of Traffic and Transportation Psychology evaluates cycling measures for citizens with a migration background and researches gamification as an approach to increase the attractiveness of certain sections of cycling infrastructure.

In line with these research foci, staff from the Dresden Institute of Transport Planning and Road Traffic have presented several times at ICSC conferences. Prof. Petzoldt has also been a member of the ICSC Scientific Advisory Board since 2014. There are also good contacts with the organisers and participants of the ICSC beyond the conference.

About ICSC

The first edition of the conference took place in 2012. In previous years (pre-Covid), around 200 participants from all over the world (e. g. Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand) regularly attended. The conference combines scientific presentations (usually in two to three parallel event forums) and posters, so that an active exchange between the participants is promoted. Selected papers are published in a special issue of a relevant peer-reviewed journal.
