Funding was provided by the TU Dresden's Environment Commission. The vehicle is integrated into student work, research projects and events at the faculty. Use by employees possible.

The TU Dresden's Environment Commission regularly promotes measures related to the topic of a more environmentally friendly and sustainable university. Last year, a group of transport and traffic scientists from TU Dresden was awarded a grant for an e-cargo bike.

The application from the Institute of Transport Planning and Road Traffic of the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences was one of three project applications for a total of six (e)-cargo bikes. The applications were awarded a total of four cargo bikes, including the one from the transport sciences, which was finally approved in January 2022 with a sum of 7,000 euros. Due to long delivery times, it then took several months until the cargo bike arrived at the faculty in September 2022.

The new e-cargo bike will be used primarily for final theses, research projects, teaching and also by faculty staff. In teaching, it will be used specifically in modules of traffic and transport psychology and transport ecology as well as by the students themselves. The first use was at the International Cycling Safety Conference in November 2022 in Dresden. The conference was organised by the chairs of Traffic Pand Transport psychology, Transport Ecology and the Chair of Integrated Traffic Planning and Road Traffic Engineering. The cargo bike accompanied the participants' bicycle tour and transported the luggage of the international guests.

Use in projects within the framework of the National Cycling Plan

In addition, the e-cargo bike will be used for future projects within the framework of the National Cycling Plan. For example, a project on the effects of an increasing share of cargo bikes on existing cycling infrastructure is currently in the application phase. The cargo bike is firmly planned for other events at the faculty (e.g. UNITAG) and projects of the transport ecologists (MoveOn project).

In addition, there are current research projects of the Chair of Traffic and Transport Psychology at the faculty, in which the new e-cargo bike is to be integrated. In addition to an already completed project on e-scooters and a possible comparison of these with (cargo) bicycles, there are various projects on automated driving. These include studies on automated driving with a view to the needs of users and the consideration of special marginalised groups, as well as two further projects on the vulnerability of groups in the context of automated driving.

In addition to its use in research projects, the new e-cargo bike is also a rolling advertising vehicle for the faculty and for student marketing. The transport box features the faculty's logo as well as a QR code that leads to www.verkehr-studieren.de (a subpage of the faculty for study orientation for pupils).

About the Environment Commission

The Commission for the Environment of the TU Dresden is to ensure a (supra-)regional environmental representation of the TUD with the help of targeted public relations work. The commission also aims to promote a holistic environmental policy in all structural units of the university and to involve them in all decision-making processes. To this end, it develops recommendations on goals and measures and drafts concepts. The commission consists of six working groups (WGs) that consult on various environmental and climate policy issues. In addition to WG-related meetings, the public meetings of the Commission can be attended.

Members of the TU Dresden are explicitly encouraged to submit concrete sustainable, environmentally sound proposals for measures and to receive corresponding financial support for the implementation of these projects. There are annual funding rounds for this, including application submissions in mid-October each year.
