Real-time control: Decision support system from the Center for Rail Logistics in Dresden supports dispatchers in 24/7 operations.

The YAMATO (Yard Management Tool) decision support system developed at the Center for Rail Logistics is already being used productively in the second train formation facility in Germany. Within the scope of a virtual rollout - caused by Corona - YAMATO was introduced in the train formation facility in Halle and since then supports the dispatchers in 24/7 operation.

YAMATO is a tool for the real-time control of train formation facilities and supports the dispatchers in their challenging daily work. YAMATO aggregates real-time information from the train formation systems and the surrounding network and prepares it for the dispatchers. The intelligent logic core of YAMATO also calculates a forecast for the further course of operations and creates mathematically optimised recommendations for action for the dispatchers. YAMATO thus makes a significant contribution to increasing the quality of execution in single-wagon transport.

Center for Rail Logistics

Since December 2013, DB Cargo and the Dresden University of Technology, Chair of Rail Transport, Public Urban and Regional Transport, have been cooperating with universities to research and develop solutions in the field of "rail-affine logistics chains". This opens up forward-looking opportunities for production improvements, digitalisation and innovative business models for rail freight transport in Germany and Europe.

In 2019, within Germany

3.2 billion tonnes

of goods were transported by truck. Freight transport by rail comprised "only" 349 million tonnes.
