Why our own car is so important to us
As part of the lecture series "Mobility4Future" at the TU Dresden, Prof. Stefan Gössling asked about the value of the car and presented findings from evolutionary psychology, social psychology and clinical psychology.
"How can transport become sustainable? This is the question that the lecture series "Mobility 4 Future - on the way to climate-friendly mobility" at TU Dresden is exploring in the summer semester of 2021. National and international experts will approach the topic from different angles and try to find answers.
On 28 April 2021 Prof. Stefan Gössling, Professor of Tourism Research at Linnaeus University / Human Ecology at Lund University in Sweden, devoted himself to the "Psychology of the Car". The dominance of the car in traffic systems is a central problem of urban planning. Exhaust, noise, accidents, density, space - almost all issues of sustainable development in urban areas are linked to the private car. Nevertheless, it seems impossible to design transport systems differently; the critical questioning of the car remains politically taboo.
The lecture asked about the values of the car, which go far beyond its instrumental functions, and presented findings from evolutionary psychology, social psychology and clinical psychology. Only on the basis of a better understanding of the symbolic and affective car values can we succeed not only in thinking differently about traffic but also in changing it in practice.
