Transport ecologists from TU Dresden and the start-up Cyface impress the jury with their web tool for forecasting the utilisation of cycling infrastructure.

Success for transport scientists from Dresden: At this year's German Bicycle Award 2022, the "bikeSim" project convinced the jury. In the category "Service & Communication" it won the third prize of 1,500 euros.

The "bikeSim" web tool for forecasting the utilisation of cycling infrastructure was developed by researchers from the Chair of Transport Ecology of the "Friedrich List" Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences at TU Dresden together with the Dresden-based start-up Cyface. The research project ran from 1 November 2019 to 30 April 2021 (article on project completion in 2021). The web application is intended to enable municipal stakeholders to simulate cycling in their cities easily, intuitively and without prior knowledge. In this way, the planning of cycle paths can be geared to the preferences of cyclists in the future.

A visibly delighted Stefan Huber accepted the award live from Cologne. He heads research projects in the field of cycling at the TU Dresden and was instrumental in driving the "bikeSim" project forward. Asked about the use of the prize money, he said: "It will be put into the further development of the tool. We are currently outlining a follow-up project."

The prizes in the category "Service & Communication" were presented by Oliver Luksic, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Transport: "Digitalisation makes cycling even more attractive. The selected projects show this. The winning projects collect meaningful data and open it up for municipal cycling planning and research. This is important, because cycling infrastructure must be planned from the user's perspective. I warmly congratulate the winners. They are making an important contribution to sustainably strengthening cycling in Germany."

The German Bicycle Award

The German Bicycle Award is an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft fußgänger- und fahrradfreundlicher Städte, Gemeinden und Kreise in NRW e.V. (AGFS). (AGFS). The competition is supported by the Zweirad-Industrie-Verband e. V. and the Verbund Service und Fahrrad e. V. The jury consists of 18 experts in cycling traffic.

Project "bikeSim" - in brief

In the "bikeSim" project, transport and traffic scientists from TU Dresden together with the start-up Cyface investigated the extent to which GPS data on cycling traffic and open map data can be used to analyse and simulate cycling traffic. The result of the study is, among other things, a web application with which municipal actors can easily and intuitively carry out cycling simulations. This enables the planning of cycle paths to be geared to the preferences of cyclists.
